Types of Bows

Throughout the ages there have been a multitude of types of bows, and this section is here to make sense out of it for you. Traditional bow information as well as kid's and youth bows can be found here.

Archery Bows

Those interested in the sport of archery will want to know the specific types of bows that are used. Field archery may be done with a recurve or a compound depending on the area the archer is competing in.

Compound Bow

Compound bows are one way to have more power with less pulling force required to draw the string. Pulleys or cams are used, allowing the string to actually accelerate while approaching the resting point, which imparts more power on the arrow.

Recurve Bow

The standard recurve bow differs from longbow or simple in that the string will touch the bow limbs when strung, rather than only having contact with the tips. The design allows for an easier draw, and a shorter bow, that is favored by many archers.

Cross Bow

Due to the crossbow's ease of use, many have had uses for it throughout history. Less skill is required to shoot a crossbow, which made popular during the medieval times, and many states still allow its use for hunting if a hunter is disabled.

Self Bow

A self bow is, by definition, any bow that is made from one piece of wood and is of a much simpler design. The most traditional English longbows are made as the simple selfbow, with only a radius of yew wood used to make it.

Traditional Archery Bows

The history of archery goes back further than that of the Egyptians, and traditional archery bows have been made from everything from Yew to Ash and more. Read on for further details on everything from yumi to arabalests.

Kids Bow

Kids love the responsibility associated with getting their first bow, and parents love the patience required to master it. There are a number of bows and accessories available on the market for children and parents would be wise to book up first.

Youth Bow

Knowing what to look for in a youth bow can be nearly as important as the youth having the responsibility to use it. Grip size comes into factor, as does draw weight and total weight of the bow.
